How net worth is calculated

Net worth is one subtraction: Net worth = total assets − total liabilities. Assets are everything you own that has a money value. Liabilities are everything you owe.

Use today's value for each item, not what you paid for it: the current balance of an account, the current market value of a property, the amount still outstanding on a loan. One figure on its own says little. What matters is whether it grows from one month to the next.

A worked example

Say you have 150,000 in cash and bank accounts, 400,000 in savings and fixed deposits, 250,000 in investments and a vehicle worth 1,200,000: total assets of 2,000,000. You owe 600,000 on a loan and 45,000 on a credit card: total liabilities of 645,000. Your net worth is 2,000,000 − 645,000 = 1,355,000.

Frequently asked questions

Net worth is the value of everything you own minus everything you owe. It is the single figure that sums up your financial position on a given day.

Assets include cash, bank and mobile wallet balances, savings schemes and fixed deposits, investments, property, vehicles and money other people owe you. Liabilities include loans, credit card balances and any money you owe to other people.

Yes. If you owe more than you own, net worth is below zero. That is common early in a career or just after taking a large loan, and it improves as the debt is paid down and savings build.

Once a month is enough for most people. Checking on the same day each month makes the figures comparable and shows the direction clearly.
